Yala National Park gets highest income during 2017

Ministry of Wildlife and Sustainable Development says that 700.58 million earned during 2017. It was also recorded that highest number of visitors in the park in the same year.  3, 97, 122 persons visited the park which includes 189,195 foreign tourists.

9 of November 2017, Sri Lankan Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera presented the relatively eco-friendly and sustainable budget for year 2018, when we compare that with previous years. He introduced the new budget as a blue green budget.

Samoa and Sri Lanka step up to protect the Blue Shark at global migratory species conference

Approximately 20 million Blue Sharks are killed each year, propelling Samoa and Sri Lanka to jointly propose to place the species on a special global list asking countries to conserve them and protect their habitat.The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is holding its Twelfth Conference of the Parties in Manila, Philippines next week which Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, New Zealand, Palau and Samoa will be attending.  This monumental gathering is held every three years.

The CMS had 124 Parties as of July this year, uniting to protect migratory species placed under two different lists.  Appendix 1 lists migratory species that are endangered and, Appendix 2 lists migratory species which have an unfavourable conservation status requiring international agreements for their conservation and management.At the CMS COP12 Samoa and Sri Lanka are proposing that the Blue Shark be placed on Appendix 2 in a show of proactive conservation.

“keep and protect a sapling which is planted by you, like a way you keep and protect a little girl with love and compassion from her birth to young age. That was why we started the reforestation project –Vana Roopa(planting program) on the International Day of girl Child(October 11)” ,Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena revealed while addressing the opening ceremony of Sri Lanka Next program as a chief guest on 16th of October 2017 at BMICH, Colombo. President Sirisena has been considered as one among the very few environmental friendly politicians in Sri Lanka.

Strong winds along the coastal line

Met Department states that strong winds could experience in the coastal areas within the next 72 Hours.  Heavy showers will occur at times in the Bay of Bengal to the north-east and east of the island.
