Effective science communication requires more collaboration between researchers, communications officers and journalists. This was one of the key messages in a 2-day science reporting workshop, held on 5-6 May 2017,jointly organised by theUnited Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA), the United Nations University Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT),Netherlandsand the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), Accra. The workshop, dubbed “Reach & Turn” aimed to helpbridge the gap between science communication and science journalism.

We didn’t start it and we won’t see the end of it, but we are the first ones feeling the effects and the ones with the responsibility to act on it now for others not to get the scariest consequences. High concentration of greenhouse gases and a way of living that relays on them are the heritage we were given, because of it, new generations face the threat of rising oceans, less fresh water to drink, threats to food security, and others.

Restrict Sand Dredging Licenses to Non-Fishing Communities says UN University Report

A research report, released by the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA), is urging relevant stakeholders in the natural resources management sector in Africa to consider limiting the activities of sand dredgers to non-fishing communities. This, the report indicated, can be achieved, by ensuring that licenses are given to sand dredgers to operate only in communities that are not engaged in fishing. This aims to help reduce the negative effects of sand dredging on fishing.
