Environmental and Social Justice Awarded to Ifham Nizam, Editor The Sunday leader Newspaper

Senior Advisor to President, Parliamentarian Ven. Athuraliye Rathana hands over the award titled Environmental and Social Justice Award 2016’ to Ifham Nizam, News Features Editor of The Sunday Leader Newspaper, in recognition of outstanding contribution for environmental conservation, defending environmental and social justice in Sri Lanka.

The Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ), Friends of the Earth Sri Lanka and Local Environmental Organisation in Weli Oya organized the award ceremony at Kotaweheramankanda, Weli Oya, Thanamalwila to mark the World Environment Day.

Protests to Reinstate Dr. Pilapitiya as DG of Wildlife

A protest was staged today to urge the government to reinstate Wild life department Director General Dr. Sumith Pilapitiya who resigned earlier from his posts due to political pressure.  Sources said that  the resignation came due to an incident took place in Yala wildlife park where Wildlife minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera has exerted pressure on warden of the Yala wildlife park Suranga Ratnayake to apologize to minister Sajith Premadasa.

Meanwhile in Srilankannewspapers the TOP heading that we were reading for past few days was “floods and landslides in Srilanka due to nonstop heavy rain” this is one of the biggest disaster which has taken place in Sri lankawhich is after Tsunami (Dec 2004). Many people has died and effected by this, some are lost haven’t found yet. Beginning on 15 and 16 May, a low pressure system triggered strong winds and very heavy rain across much of Sri Lanka. As much as 300 mm of rain fell in 24 hours in some locations. This triggered flooding and landslides, including a landslide near Aranayaka division in Kegalle District, which devastated three villages.nobody was expecting such incident like this after an abnormal sun heat which has caused during Feb – May, have written more about this on our previous articles.

Prime Minister Addresses Sri Lanka’s First National Summit on Foresight and Innovation

Honourable Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka addressed Sri Lanka’s first National Summit on Foresight and Innovation for Sustainable Human Development today, organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of National Policies and Economic Affairs.

Honourable Prime Minister addressed the gathering at a high-level plenary themed ‘Reimagining Governance: An Opportunity for Sri Lanka’ alongside Mr. Rushdi Abdul Rahim, Director, myForesight, Government of Malaysia, Mr. Thomas Prehn, Director, MindLab, Government of Denmark, Ms. Cornelia Amihalachioae, Performance and Social Innovation Lead, eGov Center, Government of Moldova and Ms. Marina Mkhitaryan, Lead, Kolba Innovation Lab, UNDP Armenia at a session moderated by Mr. Peter Batchelor, UNDP Resident Representative UNDP Sri Lanka.

Death toll climbs to 8 as rain continues

The death toll, in the floods, landslides and strong winds that have ravaged the country during the past few days, has risen to eight leaving some 207, 500 people from 47, 922 families badly affected, the  Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.
