Sri Lanka Celebrates World Environment Day 2009

The World Environment Day was celebrated on a grand scale in Sri Lanka at Viharamaha Devi Park Colombo.

The Chief Guest Minister of Agriculture Development Hon. Maithripala Sirisena, stated that according to the concept Mahinda Chinthana Sri Lanka would be developed with the creation of more ‘green’ jobs, He further stated that the Western Province of Sri Lanka is currently undergoing severe hardships; He further stated more droughts could occur in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka and the world will be facing a food crisis in the near future future.

Speaking at the event Minister Hon.Patali Champika  Ranawaka said that developed countries are responsible for the damage done to the to South Asian region.  He further said neighboring countries such as Maldives and Bangladesh would loose its territory due the rise in sea level around the Bay of Bengal.
 
The ceremony was inaugurated with cultural events and awards ceremony for the winners of the photographic competition, which was also held on the same day; winners for the Green Jobs awards were also awarded in several categories
