University Students Celebrates World Earth Day
Forestry science faculty of Sri Jayawardenapura University
celebrated World Earth Day 2010
at Yagirala sanctuary on the 22nd of April,
The students Commemorated the event by initiating a tree planting project,which included
many medicinal herbs.
Forestry science faculty of Sri Jayawardenapura University have been carrying out research at the Yagirala sanctuary for many years. Located in the wet zone of Sri Lanka, this sanctuary is considered to be one of the major rain forests in the country.
These university students have done research in an area of 100 acres inside the rain forest,
a pines plantation also exists inside the rain forest for more than 30 years.
Many medicinal herbs and 100 plants of nedun trees were cultivated to celebrate World Earth Day.
This project was co chaired by Professor Thilak Chandrasekara, Project Advisor Ms. Lakmini Senadeera and members of the forestry science faculty. Many university students volunteered on that day.
The faculty have been engaged in tree planting projects for several times.
Their past projects also include a mahogany plantation which has shown a major success so far.
