Tsunami Watch In Effect For Sri Lanka, Other Areas Canceled After 7.5 Quake In The Indian Ocean
7.5 magnitude earthquake at 12.50 a.m. local time(SL Time) was centered
about 157 kilometers west-southwest of Misha on India’s
Nicobar Islands. It struck about 35 kilometers deep,
making it a shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center immediately issued a tsunami watch
for India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia.
But about an hour later, all watches – except for India – were canceled. “There is the possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometers from the earthquake epicenter,” the center said.
