Thirteen countries which are
home to the remaining tiger populations
in the world has met in Bali recently
to try agree a global plan to double the tiger populations by 2022.(According to the Chinese calendar this is the tiger year & 2022 will be the next tiger year) This work lays the foundation for the meeting of the global leaders planned to be held later this year at a Tiger summit in St.Petersberg, Russia to discuss this global plan further.
Tigers (Panthera tigris) are classified as an endangered species according to the IUCN red list. There are nine recent subspecies of tiger, three of which are already extinct.(Bali Tiger – P.t.balica, Javan tiger – P.t.sondaica, Caspian tiger – P.t.virgata) Their historical range ran through Bangladesh, Siberia, Iran, Afghanistan, India, China, and southeast Asia, including some Indonesian islands, but today it’s range is highly degraded & fragmented & they face many other threats too.The estimated wild tiger population in world is around 2000.The South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis) is considered as one of the 10 most endangered animals in the world & since 1983 no south china tigers were sighted.
