World Environment Day Celebrations
Soba 2012 World Environmental Day exhibition concluded today at the premises of Royal College Colombo. This exhibition attracted people from many areas in Sri Lanka. Comprising 140 stalls from Government sector, Non Government sector and the Private sector this exhibition was opened with the World Environment Day event held at the Royal College Colombo yesterday.
This occasion was graced by the Minister of Environment Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena, Western Province Agriculture, Agrarian Development, Minor Irrigation, Industries and Environmental Affairs Minister Udaya Gammanpila, Deputy Minister of Environment Abdul Cadar, Secretary Ministry of Environment B M U D Basnayake and the Chairman of Central Environmental Authority Charitha Herath.
Speaking at the main event Minister of Environment Anura Priyadharshana Yapa stated that “It is at this stage that the world has understood the value of our green economic practices which have been practiced throughout Sri Lanka’s history. Minister further said in future Environment Ministry will work towards to construct green houses in each selected school for the 1000 secondary schools development program with the Ministry of Education.
Speaking at the event Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena said that National Institute of Education has been instructed to include environmental studies from in the Science and Social Studies subjects. Western Province Agriculture, Agrarian Development, Minor Irrigation, Industries and Environmental Affairs Minister Udaya Gammanpila also addressed the event. Minister Gammanpila stated that Sri Lanka is the only country which has exceeded USD 2000 in per capita income while maintaining the level of carbon emissions below one metric tons per capita. He further stated the forest cover in Sri Lanka is 29 percent while the rate in the world is only 10.4 percent of the total land.
