World Environment Day

The theme of the World Environment Day, on June 5, this year has been decided as ‘Think, Eat and Save’. Thousands of people across the world celebrated the World Environment Day with main event was celebrated in Mongolia.

 In China, World Environment Day was celebrated at Shanghai’s Tongji University’s International Student Conference on Environment and Sustainability (ISCES), focusing on “Food, Health and Sustainable Development”. Meanwhile, in India, the youth sector took part in runs, awareness-raising activities and tree-planting ceremonies from Bangalore to Chennai. The United States is also expected to have major festivities for World Environment Day today.Meanwhile, the Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy Resources Susil Premjayantha said that a  new programme will be launched today to secure active contributions of local government institutions towards environmental conservation. Local government bodies as grassroots level institutions will play a prominent role in solid waste management under this programme.  The Minister said his ministry would work in close coordination with the Provincial Council and Local Government Ministry to secure the active participation of those institutions for environmental conservation
