How to empower a youth climate activists, Youth awareness on climate change.

This side event was hosted by Sri Lanka focussing on the National Adaptation Initiatives of Sri Lanka and means of Implementation on Education Training & Public Awareness, This event took place during the UNFCCC COP20 in Lima, Peru.

The first segment is led by the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy Sri Lanka and the second segment is a Joint effort from Earth Lanka (Sri Lanka), Climates (France), Fundacion TierraVida (Argentina) and CLIC (Latin American and the Caribbean Youth Movement on Climate Change).

Dr. Sunimal Jayathunga (Director – Climate Change) Climate Change Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment, Sri Lanka.

Dr.Jayathunga said: Ministry of Environment and renewable energy of Sri Lanka is the National Focal Point for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Sri Lanka is the pathway to the convention since 1993 hence to the protocol since 2002.

This side event is such an evident to show our collaboration, here in this side event from Sri Lanka we have the participation from Climate Change Secretariat, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of External Affairs, University of Paradeniya and two civil societies namely Earth Lanka and Janathaksa.

He Said; We are here to show our efforts on Climate Change Impact in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka being a developing country and a tropical island in the Indian ocean is highly vulnerable to the effects of Climate Change.

The objective of this side event is to showcase and share with you our national circumstances on climate change and climate change smart initiatives that we have in place in the country to enable sustainable development in the country and also case study developed by Earth Lanka on empowering a youth climate activists.

In the two weeks of negotiations in Lima from over 190 nations have taken important steps towards the new climate change agreement in 2015 to enhance the action of all countries.

The nations resulted in the development of elements of the new agreement, which is expected to be adopted in Paris in late 2015 and they agreed on the basic rules on how all countries can submit their contributions to the new agreement during the first quarter of next year.

Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework on Climate
Change (UNFCCC), said

“Governments arrived in Lima on a wave of positive news and optimism resulting from the climate action announcements of the European Union, China and the United States to the scaling up of pledges for the Green Climate Fund.”

“They leave Lima on a fresh wave of positivity towards Paris with a range of key decisions agreed and action-agendas launched, including on how to better scale up and finance adaptation, alongside actions on forests and education,”

Ms Figueres also thanked Ollanta Humala, the President of Peru, along with the government and the people of Peru for hosting the United Nations and some 11,000 delegates from all over the world.

“The negotiations here reached a new level of realism and understanding about what needs to be done now, over the next 12 months and into the years and decades to come if climate change is to be truly and decisively addressed,”

Financing the response to climate change Governments have made strides in coordinating the contribution of climate finance as well as various existing funds.

In Lima, there were new ads contributions to the Green Fund Weather by Norway, Australia, Belgium, Peru, Colombia and Austria. Total contributions to date the Fund totalling about 10,200 million.

In another show of support for adaptation in developing countries, Germany announced a contribution of 55 million euros Fund Adaptation.
China announced a contribution of $ 10 million to cooperation South-South and said that next year will double that amount.

More countries have accepted the Doha amendment to the Kyoto Protocol Nauru and Tuvalu deposited their instruments of acceptance of the Amendment of Doha. With which, to date, 21 Parties have accepted and need to do 144 to enter into force.
