Sri Lanka Rarifies The Paris Climate Agreement
I last updated on the Climate Agreement of the United Nation’s Framework Convention on Climate Change, when Peru submitted the instruments of ratification in July. The latest is that Sri Lanka today ratified the agreement.
Minister of Science, Technology and Research Susil Premajayanth signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change at a ceremony held at the United Nations headquarters, New York in April this year on behalf of the government.
The legislation was presented to Parliament by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and called on all Parliamentarians to approve the bill. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe speaking at the parliament today, also said rapid development of the world economy in the last two centuries, industrial revolution and testing of nuclear weapons have all made a significant impact.
It is evident that Sri Lanka has major development projects ahead including power plants. Therefore, it is important that the terms of the agreement, especially the targets for 2020 are carefully taken into account in the planning processes.
