5th Asia Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum 2016 commenced in Colombo, Sri Lanka recently. The conference is attended by over 650 international delegates from 60 countries.  200 Local delegates also attend the forum which will continue for 3 days up to October 19th.

The forum will bring together policymakers, scientists, donors, youth, and representatives from over 25 countries.   Building on the momentum of previous APAN events, this year’s theme “Living below 2°C: Bridging Gaps in Policy & Practice” explores platforms and concrete pathways for even greater partnerships by governments, civil society and business.  The 2016 APAN Forum will be hosted by the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, Government of Sri Lanka, at the historic Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo, Sri Lanka along with Sri Lanka Next Conference “The Blue Green Era”.

Speaking at the event Secretary to the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment Government of Sri Lanka Mr.Udaya Senevirathne stated that this initiative focus more on how the future generations can work on solutions for adaptation and mitigation in regional, national and international level.

Addressing the event Co Chair of APAN Prof. Masudaka Watanabe stated that Adaptation goals need to be achieved to keep low carbon mechanisms in cities. Therefore the forum for2016 will focus more on Adaptation strategies, low carbon economies, green economies.

Hon. Susil Premajayantha minister of science and technology addressed the main plenary and stated that Sri Lanka is moving to increase the thick forests cover to 33% by 2030. He further stated that the forum will be joined with Sri Lanka Next conference.

Dr.Sunimal Jayathunge Director of climate change secretariat of Sri Lanka expressed that Sri Lanka is the firsts country to focus on Blue- Green Agenda as the coastal belt and marine bio diversity had a diverse impact due to climate change during  pasts years. Dr. Jayathunge further stated that coastal and marine issues have been addressed through NAP’s and INDCs of Sri Lanka.
