QUR’ANIC BOTANIC GARDEN LAUNCHES PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST FOR EDUCATION CITY STUDENTS
The Qur’anic Botanic Garden (QBG) has announced a photography contest for university students in Qatar as part its annual ‘Ghars’ tree planting campaign.
The contest, developed in conjunction with Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar), and the Youth Hobbies Center of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, aims to showcase QF’s talent pool as well as support botanical conservation efforts in Qatar.
To kick start the contest, QBG provided students with a technical workshop in HBKU’s Student Center, on Tuesday, 29 November. The workshop was delivered by VCUQatar Professor George Awde, and aimed to improve and refresh students’ photography skills, and guide and enhance their understanding of light and subject, among other photography topics.
Over the coming months, QBG will also deliver presentations on a wide range of plants and trees in Qatar to assist and inspire participants with the competition’s themes of: ‘The most attractive tree(s) or landscape inside the Education City/flora of Qatar’; ‘The biggest and oldest trees in Qatar’; ‘Tree components, including roots, bark, stem, leaves, and flowers’, as well as other pre-existing ‘Ghars’ initiatives in Qatar.
Registration for the competition is open to all university students in Qatar until 31 March 2017, and the top three winners will be announced on 14 April 2017. The winner will be honoured at the ‘Ghars’ closing ceremony on 18 April 2017, as well as awards for the competition’s three runners up.
QBG is a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF). By creating an opportunity to appreciate and interact with Qatar’s natural landscape, QBG hopes to increase local knowledge about Qatar’s flora through the popular medium of photography.
