World Environment Week From 30 May - June 5

Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment have declared an Environment week from 30 May- June 5 2019 to commemorate World Environment Day under the theme of “Minimization of air pollution through sustainable development” .

A number of systematic Programmes have also been arranged under the National Environmental Commemoration Week from May 30th to June 05th declared by the National Programme for Environmental Conservation of the Presidential Secretariat relating to the World Environmental Day celebrations as follows:

May 30 – Environment Cleaning and Awareness Day

May 31 – Air Pollution and Adverse Impact Minimization Day

June 01 – Tree planting Day

June 02 – Water and Water Source Conservation Day

June 03 – Bio-diversity Conservation Day

June 04 – Sustainable Land Management Day

June 05 – World Environment Day

Accordingly, arrangements have been made to officially declare open digitally the Air Quality Observation Centres stationed on the remises of the Central Envieonmental Authority at Battaramulla, the Kandy Central Bus Stand and in the Biyagama area around the Kelani River, at the National function to be held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall under the aegis of His Excellency the President. The academic lecture will be delivered on this occasion by Dr. A.G.T. Sugathapala, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Studies of the University or Moratuwa on the topic “Air Pollution and its Adverse Impacts”.

In addition to that, the publication ‘Hand Book on Air Quality Process’ and the ‘Sobaketha’ magazine containing articles on contmporary environmental themes will be presented to His Excellency the President at this national function. Several Programmes have also been planned by all the Provincial and District Offices of the Central Environmental Authority under the World Environment Commemoration Programme implemented islandwide. Under that, a number of programmes enabling the active engagement of the public have been lined up such as awareness creation among school children and other groups in various fields, tree planting campaigns, promotion of waste recycling etc.
