After a century of constant decline, 2016 was a year that saw the number of wild tigers on the rise for the first time. Around 3,890 tigers now exist in the wild, according to data released in April. That’s up from an estimated 3,200 reported in 2010. WWF works with governments, law enforcement, and local communities to advocate zero tolerance for tiger poaching across Asia, and uses the latest technology to protect and connect fragile tiger habitat. In some areas, including much of Southeast Asia, tigers are still in crisis and still declining in number.

In 1973, Project Tiger was started in India, which was a unique plan to save tigers on the planet. The project was promoted by Indira Gandhi and her son Rajiv Gandhi till 1990. Later on, several changes took place in the project. But according to WWF around 3,900 wild tigers are left in the world. Since the beginning of the 20th century, over 95% of the world’s tiger population is lost. It is said that across the Asia, the snaring crisis poses a grave threat to wild tigers. We can’t deny the fact that tigers are the largest species of the cat family and also one of the most iconic animals on the planet. About a century ago, there may have been over 100,000 tigers that roam in the planet.
