Global Climate Strike
Sri Lanka participated for global climate strike today. This event was inaugurated by Centre for Environment Justice, an organization working towards climate justice in Sri Lanka. The event was graced by the religious communities, youth organizations and women groups.
Global climate strike is an initiative of 15-year-old Swedish girl Greta Thunberg who sat outside the Swedish parliament every Friday with a sign saying “Skolstrejk för klimatet (School Strike for Climate). Since 2015 she appealed her government that they weren’t doing enough to meet their Paris Agreement targets, and that time was running out to make the changes possible to give her generation a future.
This time more than 160 countries are participating for global climate strike with the participation of adults and younger generations in the world. A string of high profile companies such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google have publicly announced they are giving their employees the day off to attend the strikes in support of the youth. Many church groups, unions, schools and private companies have also expressed their solidarity with the striking children.
