Renowned Environmentalists Kamini Vitarana No More
Kamini Vitarana who is a pioneer environmentalists and an ecologists passed away today.
In 1970s, Kamini was part of a brave resistance by scientists and civil society groups against the then socialist government’s scheme for mass logging the Sinharaja rainforest , which is one of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity hotspots. The Sinharaja resistance eventually succeeded. Sinharaja has since been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Over the next few decades, Kamini was involved in a multitude of environmental studies, public education campaigns, protests and advocacy efforts.
