Red Alert On Cyclone Burevi

Due to the depression situation occurred in the Bay of Bengal and turning it into Cyclone ‘Burevi’, the Department of Meteorology issued a Red Alert on adverse weather conditions in for high wind and heavy rainfall in Northern, North-Central, Eastern and North Western in the country.

The department said the system was very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 24-hours. “The system is also likely to move West-Northwest wards and cross eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Batticaloa and Point-Pedro around tomorrow (December 2) evening and night,” it added.

Moreover, the department said very strong gusty winds at a speed of between 80 and 100 kmph would be expected in Northern, North-Central, Eastern and North Western provinces for the next two days.

“Intermittent showers with 200mm would also be experienced at many places in Northern, North-Central, Eastern and North Western provinces,” it added.

The department, therefore, requested general public and the fishing communities to be vigilant regarding impending extreme weather situation.
