International Clouded Leopard Day is celebrated on August 4 every year. It is a day to spread awareness and an attempt to increase the profile of clouded leopards both in captivity and in the wild. The clouded leopard, considered to be a medium-sized cat, can move at up to 40 miles per hour. Apart from this, it can also swim. While the clouded leopard genetically diverged from pantherine cats a million years ago, its population is suspected to be fewer than 10,000 mature individuals. It was listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List in 2008. International Clouded Leopard Day was established by Howletts Wild Animal Park in 2018. The day was spearheaded by Lauren Amos and Dan Kemp (carnivore keepers from Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent who work with clouded leopards on a daily basis).
