As the world prepares to observe World Water Day on March 22 (today), the Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ) stands at the forefront, advocating for inclusive policies to ensure safe drinking water and sanitation for all communities, without disparity.
Marked by the United Nations, World Water Day serves as a critical reminder of the global water crisis and the imperative to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 – water and sanitation for all by 2030. Currently, 2.2 billion people worldwide lack access to safely managed drinking water services, highlighting the urgent need for action.
At the heart of CEJ’s mission lies the commitment to address water inequities, particularly among marginalized communities. Collaborating with the Freshwater Action Network South Asia, CEJ has been actively engaged in empowering groups such as urban poor, estate sector communities, disabled communities, and indigenous communities to demand their right to safe drinking water and sanitation from government agencies.
“The provision of safe drinking water is not just a necessity; it’s a fundamental human right,” stated DilenaPathragodasu, Executive Director of Centre for Environmental Justice. “Without equitable policies and inclusive governance, millions continue to suffer the dire consequences of water scarcity and contamination. This World Water Day, we call upon governments and stakeholders to prioritize the needs of marginalized communities and ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all.”
A well-managed water cycle is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including advancements in health, education, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. CEJ underscores the urgency of implementing robust water governance mechanisms to mitigate competition for water resources and avert potential water crises across various sectors.
As the world commemorates World Water Day, CEJ remains steadfast in its commitment to championing the rights of all individuals to access safe drinking water and sanitation. Through collaborative efforts and advocacy, CEJ aims to drive positive change and foster a future where water security is a reality for every person, regardless of their background or circumstance.
