The Department of Agrarian Development will start crediting the financial subsidy provided by the government for paddy cultivation activities in the 2024 yala season to the farmers’ accounts from next week.

The government has decided to provide a financial subsidy to the farmers to use for paddy cultivation in the 2024 yala season.

In this regard, the Cabinet Memorandum submitted by the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, was approved by the Cabinet last March.

Accordingly, arrangements have been made to provide an amount of Rs. 15,000 per hectare to the farmers who are cultivating paddy this year as well. It is acceptable to use this money for buying fertilizers or for any other purpose for paddy cultivation.

The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, asked the Department of Agrarian Development in this regard today (24) in the morning, drawing attention to the statements made by some farmers’ organizations that they have not received this money yet.

According to this, the cultivation of paddy in the yala season has already started, but the Department of Agrarian Development emphasizes that correct information is currently being collected regarding the farmers who are cultivating paddy in the yala season. These activities will be completed this week.

According to the current information, paddy cultivation has been completed in only 25,000 hectares. But the amount of paddy to be cultivated in the yala season is 06 lakh hectares. Since fertilizers are applied after paddy cultivation, arrangements have been made to provide this financial subsidy after paddy cultivation.

According to this, the financial subsidy given for paddy cultivation in the yala season will be credited to the farmer’s accounts from next week, said Agrarian Development Commissioner General Mr. A.M. H. L. Abeyratne. The amount allocated by the government for this is Rs.7.5 billion.
