The challenge is to design, a house and operate grid-connected, attractive, net-zero-energy and adapted to the African continent during an eighteen-month period. In the final event of the competition, teams bring their modular houses in the solar village and they are open to the general public.

The winner of the competition is the team with the best achievement of solar home evaluated during a dozen of events.

The beginning was in 2002 in USA after that the Solar Decathlon competition became International and included five additional worldwide competitions: Solar Decathlon Africa, Solar Decathlon China, Solar Decathlon Europe, Solar Decathlon Latin America & Caribbean and Solar Decathlon Middle East.
Solar Decathlon Middle East 2018 will be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. In china Solar Decathlon competition is planned for 2018. The next Solar Decathlon Latin America and Caribbean will be organized in Cali, Colombia in 2019.
The 2019 Solar Decathlon will be the first ever to be held in Africa. The competition is planned for September 2019. Solar Decathlon AFRICA is open to multidisciplinary university teams for ecological buildings, twenty teams representing more than 40 universities around the world from 20 different countries have participate in this green competition that allowed to students to reveal their skills in such an experience and
launch an initiative that could help to reduce the major issue of the time “Global warming”.
