QF Initiative’s US Forum Addresses Urgent Education Needs As Part Of UN Global Goals Week
HER HIGHNESS SHEIKHA MOZA BINT NASSER PARTICIPATES IN WISE@NY AS THE WORLD’S EDUCATORS AND LEADERS DISCUSS GLOBAL EDUCATION DURING UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation (QF), participated in WISE@NY, a groundbreaking forum held in New York City by the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) – an initiative of QF – that brought together over 350 innovators, education experts, and thought-leaders to focus on the future of global education.
Taking place under the theme ‘Learning Revolutions: Creating Educational Environments for Empowerment and Inclusion’, WISE@NY – presented as part of the Global Goals Week, a series of events during the United Nations General Assembly under the auspices of the UN Foundation – allowed an international audience of practitioners and innovators to voice their opinions on education challenges around the world and share solutions, build new connections, and democratize the global education conversation.
The forum – the first to be held in the US by WISE, an initiative of QF – saw high-level speakers tackle key topics surrounding global education, including STEM learning for all, enhancing understanding of education data, the future of work, lifelong learning, and education funding.
Speaking about the goals of WISE@NY, Mr. Stavros Yiannouka, CEO, WISE, said: “Only through collaboration and the democratization of conversations can we reach an understanding of the breadth and depth of educational challenges, and the solutions that lie ahead of them.
“We believe that when people are empowered to choose what they learn, they can make the necessary changes to convert their knowledge into real action.”
As well as Mr. Yiannouka, WISE@NY speakers included Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations; Mr. Jim Shelton, former Head of Education Initiative, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative; Mr. Ben Nelson, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Minerva; and Mr. John Fallon, Chief Executive, Pearson.
Ms. Mohammed told participants in the forum: “Education is a cornerstone for prosperous and peaceful societies”; while Mr. Shelton said: “Human progress has almost always been rooted in overcoming the biggest obstacles.
“The reality is that we know more today about supporting young people in their learning development than ever before.”
Among the key elements of WISE@NY was a celebration of the winners of the 2018 WISE Awards, and the projects developed by the 2018-2019 WISE Accelerator cohort. Both initiatives are designed to generate high-impact solutions and innovative projects in the field of education.
The next WISE@ forum is scheduled to be held in Paris, France, on February 21, 2019, and will continue advancing the global movement for quality education and emphasizing its relevance in society worldwide.
