International Coastal Clean Up Week Commenced

The inaugural ceremony of the International Coastal Cleanup Day and National Marine Resources Conservation Week  2020 organized by the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) was held under the patronage of Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The event that got off the ground at Mount Lavinia Beach today (19th September 2020) was also attended by Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne.

To coincide with the International Coastal Cleanup Day and National Marine Resources Conservation Week the MEPA had organized this timely event in view of creating an attitudinal awakening of the general public by recognizing the value of coastal and marine resources and with the objective of obtaining community contribution for beach cleanup efforts. The inaugural ceremony of the programme, which has been set in motion with the participation of governmental and non-governmental organizations, was attended by Hon. Prime Minister, ministers, members of parliament, tri-service Commanders, officials from public institutions as well as civil society organizations. Meanwhile, a group of naval personnel also took part in the beach clean-up drive organized in parallel to the inaugural programme. Furthermore, Sri Lanka Navy has made arrangements to implement a range of coastal clean-up drives in beach areas of the island, in parallel to this national programme.
