Supreme Court Granted Leave To Appoint A Special Presidential Commission To Inquiry Into The X-Press Pearl

The Supreme Court yesterday granted leave to proceed the petition filed by Center for Environmental Justice seeking an order to appoint a special Presidential Commission to inquiry into the X-Press Pearl incident.

The fundamental rights case filed by Centre for Environmental Justice – CEJ, Withanage Don Hemantha Ranjith Sisira Kumara, Wijethunge Appuhamyge Herman Kumara, Aruna Roshantha Fernando, names 17 people, including President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, as respondents.

The CEJ along with the other petitioners seeks an order to appoint a special Presidential Commission of Inquiry to investigate failure to act expeditiously and for failing to properly assess the damage and to seek appropriate compensation within a reasonable time.

Senior Counsel Mr Ravindranath Dabare, Ms Nilmal Wickramasinghe- AAL, Ms Sawanthi Ponnamperuma – AAL and Ms Kanchana Balachandra – AAL, appeared for the petitioners on the instructions of Ms Thushini Jayasekara – AAL.
