Uninterrupted supply of electricity to essential areas and to set up an operational control room under the Ministry of Power is a must, newly appointed Minister of Power Pavithra Wanniarachchi yesterday mooted the idea to the Ceylon Electricity Board top management and relevant authorities

Officials comprised Ministry of Power, Ceylon Electricity Board, Ministry of Sustainable Energy, Ministry of Irrigation, Ministry of Industry, Investment Promotion Board, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Defense participated in the discussion on the possible measures to be taken to provide the uninterrupted power supply.

Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has given these instructions to the relevant divisions.

She believes that although it is difficult to provide uninterrupted power supply due to the prevailing dry weather conditions, a team of representatives from the relevant agencies has stated that steps should be taken to ensure uninterrupted supply of 24-hour power supply to essential hospitals, shelters and investment promotion zones.

The Minister further emphasised that the routine programmes be maintained. Secretary to the Ministry of Power and Energy Wasantha Perera, Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board M.M. C. Ferdinando, Vice President Nalinda Illangakoon, General Manager Dr Rohantha Abeysekera and many other heads of institutions were present.

Meanwhile, CEB officials said that provisional estimates of the CEB, the expenditure for direct power generation of the board will be Rs.287 billion and the revenue from the sales of power units Rs. 263 billion this year.

The total expenditure included the distribution, transmission, loans salaries and other overheads.

The CEB’s total power generation cost consists of Rs.52 billion for fuel, Rs.85 billion for coal, Rs.100 billion for external power purchase, and Rs.48 billion for renewable energy purchase.
