Sri Lankan government is planning to form collaborative partnership between the Sustainable Debt Coalition Initiative of Egypt and the proposed Climate Justice Forum initiated by Sri Lanka.
The assistance of the Embassy of the Republic of Egypt in this connection, will be appreciated, Environment Minister Nazir Ahamed said. Meeting top delegates here, he said that to strengthen Sri Lanka’s position in negotiations by providing updated high level technical inputs prior to COP28, he had reached out to Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC Simon Steill and submitted two initial Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for Sri Lanka to have one International Workshop on Adaptation under the GGA (Global Goal on Adaptation) programme prior to COP28.
The second EOI is about hosting the Asia Pacific Climate Week to coincide with the fifth (5th) session of the UNEP’s Asia Pacific Forum of Ministers to be held in Colombo, early October this year.
Speaking to journalists, Minister Ahamed said that with such early preparations, he is confident that Sri Lanka’s participation in the COP28 will be a better success compared to our previous ones. “However, we all have a lot of work to do to ensure such an eventuality. I urge all stakeholders to ‘go full swing’ so that we will reach greater success this time,” he added.
