The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) Sri Lanka Branch held its 60th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the 8th of November, commemorating six decades of service to the advancement of marine science, engineering, and technology in Sri Lanka.
The milestone event garnered a distinguished assembly of members, seasoned professionals, and stakeholders from the maritime and ocean sectors. It functioned as a pivotal forum for acknowledging institutional achievements, reviewing critical progress, and establishing the strategic trajectory for enhancing marine excellence. In his comprehensive welcome address, Eng. Lalantha Fernando, Chairman of IMarEST Sri Lanka, expressed his profound gratitude for the members’ unwavering dedication. He underscored the critical importance of innovation, sustainability, and robust collaboration as fundamental requirements for strengthening Sri Lanka’s competitive position within the global maritime community.
A significant procedural element of the meeting was the appointment of the Executive Committee for the 2025/2026 term, ensuring the sustained operation and forward-looking momentum of the branch. The incoming structure formally welcomed Eng. Chathura Gunesekara as an Executive Committee Member and Eng. Anna W. Karunatilleke, as the Hon. Assistant Secretary to the leadership cohort.
The newly elected team expressed their commitment to continue the branch’s legacy of excellence, while introducing fresh initiatives to engage young professionals and promote environmental stewardship across the maritime community.

Fernando thanked all members and guests for their insightful participation and reaffirmed the institution’s sustained commitment to fostering professional development, rigorous research, and cross-disciplinary collaboration in the marine and maritime fields.
