Two Powerful Earthquakes Rattle Buildings In East Java And Bali
Two powerful earthquakes, rated at magnitude 5.6 and 6.0 and happening within 30 minutes of each other, rattled buildings in Tuban, East Java, on Thursday afternoon. Tremors from the earthquakes reached all the way to Sumbawa Island in the east and Yogyakarta in the west. No tsunami warning was issued. The epicenter of the earthquakes – both in the “deep earthquake” category – was detected offshore in the Java Sea, around 56 kilometers northwest of Tuban, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.
No damages or casualties have been reported, though the strong tremors caused people in some areas of Bali Island to flee in panic.
Tremors from the same quakes were reported to have reached five districts in Lombok Island and Sumbawa Island in West Nusa Tenggara, areas that were devastated by earthquakes last year, with 440 people killed and more than 350,000 displaced.
