Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) parliamentarians and MPs representing other parties and those critical of the urea fertilizer tender to be purchased under the World Bank loan are invited for a discussion today.

A spokesman for the Agriculture Ministry yesterday said that they had found that the comments made by some factions regarding the proposed urea fertilizer consignment to be purchased under the World Bank loan for paddy cultivation in the 2022/23 Maha season are baseless.

He said that Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has decided to hold a discussion with the JVP parliamentarians who express their views and are interested in this fertilizer tender, as well as the trade union representatives of that party and other MPs.

Arrangements have been made to hold this discussion today  (October 11) at 12.00 noon at the Ministry of Agriculture, Battaramulla and the Minister kindly requests the above mentioned groups to participate.

This discussion is not meant to be a debate. The minister requests that if there are any deficiencies in the procedure of purchasing urea fertilizer, they should be identified and ideas and suggestions should be submitted regarding this procedure considering it as a national mission for the improvement of the country’s agriculture sector and the farmer’s livelihood development.

“It is the responsibility of all of us to make the upcoming Maha season a success. If the upcoming Maha season is successful, the food crisis and malnutrition situation we are currently facing may increase even more severely. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all of us to improve the agricultural sector of this country at this critical time, and for that, the support of everyone in the country is essential,” the Minister added.
