Power Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi  had instructed the Ceylon Electricity Board  to take immediate steps to get at least 1000 MW of renewable energy capacity into the national grid within this year to provide uninterrupted power supply to the people.

She said that when she was the Minister of Power and Energy in 2014, the CEB was transformed into a Rs. 15 billion profitable institution.

She added that 98% of the people in this country, including the North and East, were provided with electricity, including the house wiring in some instances for the underprivileged households.

“We did so much work and reduced the electricity bill by 25%. I left the ministry then, but since then not a single power plant has been added to our national grid to meet the demand for electricity,” she told journalists.

She also expressed concern that the government worked together with the Government of India to build the 900 MW Sampur Power Plant and prepared a tender paper, but it was not executed.
“Electricity is not being generated to meet the needs of the country. This is a big problem. I am presenting a Cabinet paper on the instructions of the President to strengthen the national power grid with renewable energy. Today this ministry has been handed over with a power crisis. We are committed to overcoming this crisis as well.” she said.
