Sri Lankan Youth Invited To Lead Global Sustainability Efforts

Young leaders in Sri Lanka have a unique opportunity to join a global movement dedicated to creating a more sustainable future. United People Global (UPG), a worldwide community focused on empowering individuals and organizations for positive action, is calling for applications for its 2026 Sustainability Leadership Program. This initiative aims to train and certify young leaders in sustainability practices, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The UPG Sustainability Leadership Program is highly competitive, with only 500 candidates selected globally from over 13,000 applicants for the 2025 cohort.
Participants will engage in a comprehensive online curriculum covering environmental stewardship, social equity, economic development, and the SDGs. Upon successful completion, they will be recognized as UPG Sustainability Leaders, equipped to drive positive change in their communities.
A standout participant from Sri Lanka, Sammu Upeka Tharindi Thilinimali, exemplifies the impact of this program. A visionary entrepreneur, business adviser, and sustainability advocate, the Founder and Directress of Ample, a sustainable fashion brand. Her work involves repurposing surplus factory fabric waste into high-quality, biodegradable textiles, setting new benchmarks for ethical fashion in Sri Lanka. She is also a certified business coach, actively supporting startups and advocating for the SDGs, youth and women’s empowerment, and responsible business practices. She holds the distinction of being the first Sri Lankan appointed as the Community Leader for eTrade for Women UNCTAD
The UPG Sustainability Leadership program emphasizes diversity, drawing participants from seven global regions, including Asia-Pacific and South Asia, ensuring a wide array of perspectives and fostering cross-cultural collaboration.
Individuals demonstrating a commitment to sustainability, and possessing a strong command of the English language. The program is open to individuals from all educational and professional backgrounds, regardless of prior experience in sustainability initiatives. Candidates are selected based on their profile, motivation, capabilities, and potential for impact within their communities and beyond.
