GURUTALAWA, SRI LANKA, 2026 — S. Thomas’ College, Gurutalawa today announced the successful completion of its first comprehensive cycle of online term-end examinations for Grade 10 and 11 students, signalling a profound shift in its pedagogical architecture.

Far from a mere transition to paperless testing, the College’s adoption of the Moodle-based ecosystem represents a strategic alignment with international standards. By simulating the rigorous, real-time evaluation environments found in premier global universities and professional licensing bodies, Gurutalawa is ensuring its students are not merely computer-literate, but “digitally native.”

The examinations, conducted within the College’s newly inaugurated IT Hub, were not an isolated experiment. They function as a critical component of a broader Academic Review Committee initiative, designed to provide data-driven insights into student performance while maintaining the highest levels of academic integrity.

The College leadership recognises that true digital transformation is not a product of hardware, but of human capital. To this end, S. Thomas’ has launched a sophisticated ICT Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme. This initiative ensures that the transition is faculty-led, empowering teachers to blend the traditional educational values with modern instructional design.

To catalyse this shift, the College has initiated a tiered hardware rollout. The first phase has seen the deployment of laptops to key members of the academic staff, with a committed roadmap to achieve a 1:1 faculty-to-device ratio in the near future.

“We are navigating a delicate balance,” a College official remarked. “While we are aggressively modernising our infrastructure, our core mission remains the cultivation of character and holistic development. We are not replacing our heritage; we are giving it a modern voice”, he further added.

This evolution reflects a broader movement within the Sri Lankan educational sector to harmonise “Old World” academic discipline with “New World” agility. By integrating these tools into the Teacher Appraisal Programme, the College ensures that technology remains a servant to quality education, rather than a distraction from it.
