Mahaweli River Is Under Risk In Trinco Area Due To Sand Mining- CENS

Centre for Environmental and Nature Studies (CENS) said that the river banks of Mahaweli river have been under the risk due to sand mining of Eastern Province, around Trincomalee area.

In a statement, the convener of the organization, Dr.Ravindra Kariyawasam pointed out that Geological Survey and Mines Bureau of Sri Lanka, had granted the permission in illegal way to mega scale sand mining in areas of Eastern province like Manampitiya,Madantetti and Neelapola.

“From September 2021 to January 2022, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau granted around 1300 permits for sand miners to start sand mining in Trincomalee area within 27 kilometers of Mahaweli river banks.”, he said.

He alleged that the mega scale sand mining happening in Trincomalee area with the support of government.
