Heavy Showers Forecast For Several Areas

The Meteorology Department yesterday forecast heavy showers over several parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces and Galle and Matara districts.Scattered rain or thundershowers will also occur in Central, Uva and Eastern provinces during evening or night, it said.The Department of Meteorology requests the people to take necessary measures to reduce the dangers caused by temporary strong winds and lightning that may accompany thunderstorm.Water levels are rising in several rivers in the South including tributaries like Nilwala, Magura and Kuda, while the Kelani River Basin, Kalu Ganga Basin and Gin Ganga Basin had received sufficient rain for irrigation purposes and hydro power generation, Irrigation Department, Hydrology and Disaster Management said.Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and Galle and Matara districts will experience fairly heavy rainfall this week, the Meteorology Department said.More than 50mm of rain is expected in the above areas while several spells of showers may occur in North western province and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya and Hambantota districts, according to the Met Department Duty Forecaster.The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued a landslide early warning to Haldumulla and Haputale divisional secretariat divisions and surrounding areas in the Badulla district.If the torrential rainfall continues, NBRO has issued early landslide warnings for parts of five districts.Accordingly, a Level 1 (Yellow) advisory is in place for several areas in Galle, Kalutara, Kegalle, Matara and Ratnapura districts.People living in the following areas are advised to be vigilant about the development of cracks in the ground, deepened cracks and ground subsidence; slanting of trees, electrical posts, fences and telephone posts; cracks in the floors and walls of buildings which have been built on slopes; and sudden appearance of springs, emerging muddy water, blockage or disappearance of existing springs in the Galle District particularly at Elpitiya and Nagoda divisional secretariat divisionsKalutara District – Dodangoda, Agalawatta, Mathugama and Walallawita divisional secretariat divisionsKegalle District – Dehiowita, Bulathkohupitiya, Yatiyanthota and Deraniyagala divisional secretariat divisionsMatara District – Pasgoda and Pitabeddara divisional secretariat divisionsThe NBRO says people should immediately evacuate the areas where the aforementioned pre-landslide signs are observed.
