
Renowned University Professors Submit Their Proposals To Secure Food Security

Three Universities have prepared a proposal for the future agricultural development and food security here, especially taking into consideration the recent negative trends that forced to a downfall in the agricultural sector.
A group of 10 professors representing the University of Peradeniya, the University of Ruhuna and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura handed over the relevant proposal to the Minister of Agriculture, Wildlife and Wildlife Conservation, Mahinda Amaraweera at the Ministry of Agriculture.
Prof. Buddhi Marambe, Prof. Janendra de Costa, Prof. Devika de Costa, Prof. Aruna Kumara, Prof. Sivanandavel, Prof. Saman Dharmakeerthi, Prof. Meththika Vithanage, Prof. Nalika Ranatunga, Prof. Warshi Dandeniya, Prof. Nilantha Liyanage were present on the occasion.
They have formulated this proposal on the development of agricultural sector activities and food security under three categories namely short term, medium term and long term
Speaking at the event, the professors said that the resolution should be implemented immediately if Sri Lanka is to overcome the food crisis that it may face in the near future.
Commenting on the proposal made by the professors, the Minister of Agriculture, Wildlife and Wildlife Conservation Mahinda Amaraweera said that steps will be taken to implement the proposals taking into consideration all the points contained in the proposal.
He also said that Sri Lanka’s food security programme was in jeopardy during the last Maha season and the current Yala season.
“Therefore, we are as the government will carry out the resolutions for food security countrywide, ” Minister said.
