National Research Symposium on Sustainable Coastal and Ocean Environment was held adjoined with Sri Lanka Next Conference 2016. Focusing on blue green economy and environment the symposium named sustainable coastal and ocean environment was held at the BMICH today. 

It evident that Sri Lanka now sees the need for credible research based information that would promote policy makers to make strategic far reaching decisions loading to sustainable development. It Is within this context that Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment decided to initiate an International research symposium as an integral part of the 2016 Sri Lanka Next Blue Green Era convention and Expo 2016.

90% of marine pollution is land based while 10% is sea based. Western province generates 60% waste annually in the coastal line. 300m3 (cubic meters) of garbage per month collected from ships of Colombo Port,  which is the largest economical harbor of Sri Lanka.

The symposium also discussed on lack of waste water treatment plants in Eastern Tourist zone of Arugambay and regulations could be taken up.

Speaking at the event Dr. Terny Pradeep Kumara general manager for Marine Protection Authority stated preserving and sustaining the marine resources is needed for future generations. Ocean is our future and it is our concern on how to exploit them and how to sustain them for future generations.
